Germany coach Joachim Low is not interested in discussing a new contract until his side have qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. Heading into next month's qualifier against Azerbaijan in Baku, Germany top Group 4 by just a point from Russia. Asked about the possibility of a new deal, Low said: "Only after the World Cup qualifiers. That will take up all my attention in the coming months. That will be the time to discuss a contract extension."
While many German eyes are on the clash against Russia in Moscow on 10 October, Low is thinking only of Azerbaijan. "There's too much talk of Moscow," he told kicker. "We shouldn't lose more points. First comes the away game in Baku, which will take place at the start of the Bundesliga season, so the players still won't be match fit. "Moreover, it's very warm and there's a long journey - this game is difficult enough, so we must concentrate. Russia is not until October."

South African 2010 World Cup tickets to be sold cheap

The lowest price for tickets at the 2010 World Cup has been fixed at R140 (USD$20.00).

This was announced on Tuesday by the chairman of the 2010 Local Organising Committee, Irvin Khoza (pictured) after the monthly LOC board meeting held at SAFA House, south of Johannesburg. Said Khoza: "We agreed on an exchange rate of R7 to one US dollar. We realise that the dollar rate of exchange will fluctuate between now and 2010. That means the LOC will bear the cost if the exchange rate goes above R7 to the dollar. The rate of exchange will be in force for next June's Confederations Cup as well."

Tickets for the Confederations Cup which will be run from June 14-28 will be on sale on November 23 – the day after the draw for the competition, which is used as dress rehearsal for the World Cup finals. The draw will be made in Johannesburg. Tickets for the World Cup finals will go on sale in January 2009.

The Confederations Cup boasts, world champions Italy, South Africa as hosts and the six continental champions, Spain, Egypt, United States, Brazil, New Zealand and Iraq.

Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke said that while the World Cup promoted itself, a lot of work was needed to promote the Confederations Cup. But Bafana Bafana's slump in form is a serious concern to not just the public but to the LOC and to the president of Fifa, Sepp Blatter who arrived in South Africa on Sunday for a four day courtesy visit. Blatter was critical of Bafana for failing to qualify for the 2010 African Nations Cup finals in Angola.

Khoza said: "France did not qualify for the 1994 World Cup finals and won the World Cup on home soil in 1998. Germany were written off before the 2006 World Cup and they ended third.
"So I am hopeful Bafana will produce the goods in 2010." But Khoza admitted Bafana face a much more serious challenge than Germany and France in 2010. Said Khoza: "We do not have too many players in top leagues in Europe. Also our players seem to have shrunk in size since 1996 compared to the west Africans."

Khoza said the solution was to pump more money in to the Premier Soccer League: "We must also make sure the South African Football Association gives the Bafana technical team as much support as they can and hopefully Bafana will rediscover how to score goals." Blatter and Valcke met former president Nelson Mandela on Tuesday afternoon in Johannesburg where they presented Madiba with a replica World Cup trophy.

Blatter vote of confidence in South Africa 2010

FIFA president Sepp Blatter on Friday said he was confident that South Africa would be able to meet its commitments associated with staging the 2010 World Cup. "Be confident in Africa and in Africans - I know they are capable of doing that which they are called to do," Blatter said on a visit to Belgrade. "Things are on schedule, four stadiums are currently under construction and everything will be ready for the Confederations Cup which will be held next year in South Africa," Blatter said in comments reported by the Beta news agency as he closed a two-day visit to Serbia, the first by a head of world football's governing body.

The Jules Rimet Trophy

A record total of 204 teams have entered the race for one of the 31 places at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™. The preliminary phase, which began in the Oceanian Zone back in August 2007, is now in full swing, with only the Host Nation guaranteed a berth in world football's showpiece event. For World Cup 2010 finals tournament 32 teams will have competing. The 64 football matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be played in nine cities of South Africa. 32 teams for the 2010 tournament will be the winners and runners up of the eight qualifying groups. These thirty two teams, divided equally into eight groups A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H each consisting of four teams. The groups are drawn up by the FIFA administration, again using seeding. The seeded teams being the host nations, the reigning champions, subject to qualification, and those with the best points per game coefficients over the qualifying phase of the tournament and the previous World Cup qualifying. Other finalists will be assigned to by means of a draw, using coefficients as a basis.

For the first time since 1934, the host nation will also take part in the qualifying stage. However, South Africa will also automatically qualify, regardless of where they finish. All other teams, including defending champions Italy, gone through the qualification process. Just the best of all world football teams managed the qualification for World Cup 2010.
